Bienenstock Entry #9: Reflective Ceiling Plan (RCP)

For this next phase of the project, I have to develop a Reflective Ceiling Plan or Lighting plan. This plan will show my lighting fixtures, switch locations, and switch whips (what switch controls what light). This has been one of the more time consuming aspects of this project, since there are five types of lighting that I had to consider that I mentioned in Entry #7. Aside from that, I feel like this is a successful RCP and I am happy with the overall layout of my lights.

Here it is:

Model

I only to provide the RCP of the Firs Floor of Submerged and I am pleased with seeing my ideas for this plan come to life, even in the details.

Thanks!

Bienenstock Entry #8: Finalized Logo

Okay guys, I am super excited to show you my final logo idealization for Bienenstock. Here it is!

Ink Drop Logo Idea 1

I am so pleased with how it turned out and I feel like it encompasses my concept for my gallery. I really loved this ink drop effect since I did want to incorporate deep shades of blues and teals. And the contrast between this blue and the red I think is really beautiful and impacting. I also wanted to incorporate touches of red/orange shades just to add pops of color that will keep the eyes moving through the space. I will probably try to keep improving this logo but this is exactly what I want as my gallery’s signature stamp. More updates to come!

Bienenstock Entry #7: Lighting Maps

I recently finalized my floor plans for the first and second floors of this gallery. Now it is time to think about lighting. There are 5 types of lighting I have to take into consideration for this phase of the project:  Accent, Focal, Task, Ambient and Daylight. With this being said, here is my first attempt at Lighting Maps for my first and second floors of Submerged.

Lighting plays a huge role in any design and for this project I am challenging myself to design with lighting instead of making it an afterthought. After some revisions, I will have a final lighting map that will help me in my lighting plan. Stay tuned!

I still have more editing to do but I feel like this is a solid revision that is a good jumping off point. Next comes Furnishes, Fixtures, and Equipment Selections! (FF&E) I can really see my thoughts and concepts developing!

Bienenstock Entry #5: Space Planning

This entry is my first attempt on an initial idea I have for space planning. This aspect was very difficult for me because Bienenstock has given strict guidelines that I have to follow in order to make sure my project is a true contender. Below, I have attached two links to the images of my first and second floors of my art gallery’s space plan.

I am excited to see where this project goes next!

Bienenstock Entry #4: 21C Museum Inspiration

There is a museum in Durham, NC and it is called 21C. This museum has gallery space and also doubles as a restaurant and hotel. This is a very modern museum in the way is displays the various mediums of art. This space includes sculptures, paintings, virtual reality, moving picture screens and other technological exhibits.

One cool feature of this museum is the bathrooms. The bathrooms are in a hallway and are completely enclosed of glass for each individual stall. When you walk in and lock the door, the glass becomes opaque, with the flip of a switch.

My favorite piece of art that was displayed was a huge American flag. This flag is made up of thousands of little green toy army men that have been painted in the colors of the flag. It was really neat to see.

Another space they used for displays were the hallways and staircases. These areas were very dark and all of the walls are mirrored but there are little cloud shaped cutouts that reveal a screen that shows clouds moving in the wind as the sun sets and rises. This was a very beautiful display and it was really cool because it was an unconventional displays.

I also loved the realistic sculptures. There were two intriguing sculptures that caught my eye. One was the head of a gazelle which was morphed with a human face. It looked creepily realistic. The other was some sort of animal that looked like a deer with feathers and an armored backbone with a long tail. Both were way out there but super cool.

This was a really neat experience and it should serve alot as inspiration for my Bienenstock Gallery. I can’t wait to dive into theis project even more and share with you guys along the way!

Tiger Leather

Last week, I was able to tour Tiger Leather’s studio! It is located in downtown Greensboro and owned by Frank Toledano. I feel like as a designer, it is very important to know quality materials and Tiger’s quality is highly recognizable in their work.

I learned about the whole process that goes into making a quality piece of leather. The process takes quite a while and I didn’t know all that goes into the process. It was neat to hear the process explained.

It was also very neat to hear how the company has progressed. Growing my company and branding my business are major goals of mine and it was inspiring to hear how someone has done so in a successful way.

Bienenstock Entry #3 Revised Concepts and Logo Ideas

This project will be filled with revisions and loads of editing. My goal is to give my very best work and really bring it for this one. Conceptualizing is certainly not my strong suit but this is definitely an improved from the O.G.

Revised Concept:

Honoring the integrity of the existing architecture and fusing classic design with innovative exhibits will stimulate the senses and submerge the viewer into a world of art. Acting as a unifying thread in the community, Submerged, will blur the lines of generations. People of various backgrounds, interests, and time periods can be brought together and dive into this experience for a deeper understanding and appreciation of the arts.

Bienenstock Entry#1: Mood Board & Concept

Hey guys! This is the beginning of something big! The Bienenstock Design Competition! This project is based around a specific client who has invested in two row houses in upstate New York that they have converted into a three story open space for a new art gallery. The first and second floors will be used as gallery space as the third will be the couple’s private living quarters. This project has to follow commercial coding for lighting requirements, fire safety requirements, accessibility requirements, etc.

To begin brainstorming about a concept, I created a mood board. A mood board is primarily for portraying a concept with the used of pictures. I wanted to go for a deeper color pallet instead of using a lot of white within the space. I feel like it helps to accent the architecture and history of the building itself.

Mood Board:

This board features images of sample materials and inspiration that will visually represent the concept.

Concept:

The goal of this design is to preserve the history and architecture of the existing building by giving it a modernized twist. The new design of the gallery space will feature innovative and technological exhibits that stimulate the senses which will submerge the viewer into a world of art. The new gallery will act as a way of unifying the community by bringing something totally new to the area. The viewers will gain knowledge and appreciation of old and new art from experiencing this gallery.

This is a new and exciting project and I’m excited to see my ideas and designs develop! Stay tuned!
