Bienenstock Entry #4: 21C Museum Inspiration

There is a museum in Durham, NC and it is called 21C. This museum has gallery space and also doubles as a restaurant and hotel. This is a very modern museum in the way is displays the various mediums of art. This space includes sculptures, paintings, virtual reality, moving picture screens and other technological exhibits.

One cool feature of this museum is the bathrooms. The bathrooms are in a hallway and are completely enclosed of glass for each individual stall. When you walk in and lock the door, the glass becomes opaque, with the flip of a switch.

My favorite piece of art that was displayed was a huge American flag. This flag is made up of thousands of little green toy army men that have been painted in the colors of the flag. It was really neat to see.

Another space they used for displays were the hallways and staircases. These areas were very dark and all of the walls are mirrored but there are little cloud shaped cutouts that reveal a screen that shows clouds moving in the wind as the sun sets and rises. This was a very beautiful display and it was really cool because it was an unconventional displays.

I also loved the realistic sculptures. There were two intriguing sculptures that caught my eye. One was the head of a gazelle which was morphed with a human face. It looked creepily realistic. The other was some sort of animal that looked like a deer with feathers and an armored backbone with a long tail. Both were way out there but super cool.

This was a really neat experience and it should serve alot as inspiration for my Bienenstock Gallery. I can’t wait to dive into theis project even more and share with you guys along the way!
